24 hour race at snowshoe.
the 24 hour mountain bike race at snowshoe raises money for the american lung association of west virginia. each rider on our team had to raise a minimum of $350 for the cause. thanks to everyone that contributed to our team and the ala of wva. a special thanks to one of our main sponsors (and the company i work for): apti and apti wireless
we were team logan's run. the team consisted of team captain marianna, dave, luis, mark, and myself. we raced in the 5 person open division. dave's girlfriend carol came along for support. we had a great time on the trip and did well. there were a few racing mishaps... 2 broken deraillers, mark woke up late for one of his turns, and there were some stitches. we ended up finishing 53/66 in our division and 281/358 overall. 10 laps in 24 hours. each lap was 18km (10.5 miles) in really rugged, disgusting, muddy, and hilly terrain. about 1/4 of the lap was unrideable and the bikes had to carried through mud and rocks. below is an account of the race and a bunch of pictures.

lap breakdown
lap 1
the race had a le mans style start. i had to run up a grueling slope and down a hill (total about 1/2 mile or so) to my bike on a rack. then, i had ride my bike up the same hill i ran and that was the start of the course. all the laps after this had to only run about 200 feet to the bike rack and begin the course. the first lap was pretty frustrating and annoying because of all the bottle necking on the trails from tons of riders and i had to stop a few times because of really bad cramping in my quads. i also decided to ride my specialized P3 which proved to be way to heavy for riding up all the hills. not a bad time on first lap though: 2:09:23
running my bike up the killer slope on lap 1. damn, the heavy bike.
lap 2
mark's turn. mark jumped on his schwinn rocket 88 and rode his lap. not bad for an angry (getting old) bald guy: 2:40:29
mark riding the powerlines on lap 2.
lap 3
marianna did this race last year so she had some experience. unfortunately, she struggled with the new time pedals and had a few crashes on this lap because of them. i'm sure her ultra light carbon fiber diamond back bike made it much easier than last year. lap time: 2:32:16

lap 4
team mechanic/racer dave's turn. dave flew through the course on his giant nrs xtc 1.0 and turned in the best lap time of our team. dave and i were here to get the most out of the course and wanted to ride as much as possible. it started to get dark at the end of his lap, so bike lights started to come on. lap time: 1:44:44

lap 5
luis. "it's dark and muddy and feels like the jungle." i think luis was having flashbacks from his army days. carol and dave caught a glimpse of him passing through the powerline section. "he just picked his bike over his head and ran down the trail like he was being chased." luis turned in a great time in the dark, but decided that one lap was enough for him for the race. lap time: 2:18:16
luis running the powerlines at night on lap 5. all you see is his bike lights.
lap 6
my turn again. this lap, i rode dave's bike to improve on my climbing speed. it was dark and i was flying through the course, until the 14km marker. snap! the rear derailler on dave's bike broke. i had to pull out the chain tool and pop off the derailler and chain. i finished the last 4km running the bike and riding down the hills. i was on target to come close to dave's excellant lap time, but i broke his bike instead. to make matters worse, when i showed up in the tent to exchange the baton. no mark? i ran back to the camp site to get him and ran into him. carol was supposed to get mark up, but she missed me at the powerline checkpoint because i had already passed through it. they weren't expecting me to finish the lap so soon. maybe it was a good thing the broken bike slowed me down or mark would have been really late. still managed a good lap time: 2:04:17
lap 7
mark's turn again. this was our slowest lap. i'm not really sure what happened. we were beginning to worry that mark may have fallen asleep on the course... but he eventually showed up. lap time: 3:32:13
lap 8
marianna's turn again. this was marianna's slowest lap so early in the morning. the course was getting really bad at this time of the day because of all the dew that was settling into the mud and making everything really slippery. lap time: 2:50:49
lap 9
dave's turn again. luckily, my p3 had the same derailler on it that dave's bike had. he took it off of my bike and replaced the one i had broken off of his to ride this lap. our plan was to meet dave at the powerline to see if he wanted to do 2 consecutive laps and i would finish off the final lap (we could have finished 11 total laps). dave was flying through the course and didn't see us at the powerline. so, i suited up and grabbed mark's bike (my 3rd different bike) to meet him at the finish not knowing if he wanted to continue or have me do another lap. dave shows up at the finish line with a broken derailler. he had broken the replacement derailler from my bike nearly at the same spot that i had previously done it at. 2 bikes, 2 laps, 2 broken deraillers, and 2 different riders. what are the odds? he lost quite a bit of time as well on this lap since he had to finish it by running just as i had to on my 2nd lap. lap time: 1:58:03
dave and i each broke a derailler. sram 9.0
lap 10
my final lap. i was feeling really good on this lap. since dave wasn't able to do 2 consecutive laps, my plan was to finish this lap in under 2 hours to get in before the 12:00 end time so that we could get in another lap. i was riding mark's rocket 88 which was a killer on downhills, but was quite a bit harder to ride uphill on compared to dave's bike. i managed to come in at 11:42 which means my lap time would have been about 1:50. dave wasn't able to do another lap because it turns out he unknowingly injured his calf on the last lap and had to get some stitches. ouch. i thought about doing another consecutive lap as well, but by this time i was pretty beat and had run out of water in my camel pack. i just sat out the clock and logged off at 12:00 which added another 18 minutes to my lap time: 2:08:20 official time, 1:49:30 actual completion time
